How to measure the waist correctly
- Get a soft measuring tape, the tailor kind. If you do not have one, use a piece of string, mark the length and measure the string against a ruler or steel tape afterwards.
- Measure at navel level. Wrap the tape around the body at the level of the navel, over thin clothing or directly on skin. This is higher than where trousers usually sit, which is why trouser size is not a reliable substitute.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight. One finger should slip comfortably between the tape and the body. Pulling the tape tight gives a smaller number and leads to a diaper that pinches.

Measuring a bedridden user
You do not need the person to stand. Roll the user gently onto one side, pass the tape under the body at navel level, roll them back, and bring the two ends of the tape together on top. Two people make this easier and more comfortable for everyone, but one careful person can do it alone.
